ANCIENT EGYPT. PTOLEMAIC FAIENCE HEAD . 300 -100 B.C

Egyptian faiance female head, possibly depicting Berenike II (c. 246-222 BC). The “melon” hairstyle of this head was popular for portraits of Berenike II in sculpture and on engraved rings in the period of her reign. The groove along the top of the head suggests that the piece originally had a stephane made from another material (gold?). The probable stephane strongly argues for the head as a Ptolemaic royal portrait, rather than as a more generic woman of the Ptolemaic period.
